Jo Goring's Personal Family History

Richard's Home Page

Jo (Joan Mary Burvill) was born 5 Sep 1941 in Twickenham, Middlesex, not far from Hampton Court Palace.

She is the fourth of ten live-born children of Albert Arthur and Elizabeth Annie. All ten are presently still living, most in southern England, on or close to the coast from Cornwall round to Essex. Two others live not far from one another in Western Australia.

Albert Arthur BURVILL was born at Cheriton, near Folkestone, Kent, on 31 Jul 1908. He was an only child. Elizabeth Annie LINK, also an only child, was born in Rochester, Kent, on 3 Oct 1908. Around 1930, Albert's parents bought a small shop with living accommodation in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, which they ran initially as a grocers also selling coal and heating oil. It was at St John the Baptist, Southend, that Albert and Elizabeth were wed on 10 Sep 1934. They had apparently met when she was in hospital and he was visiting another patient. Soon after the wedding, they moved to west London, where seven children (including one still-born) were delivered in Pancras, Staines, Twickenham and Brentford Registration Districts between 1936 and 1944. During this time Albert was working as a lorry driver, delivering petrol in and around London. Following an industrial accident which left him with an ulcerated leg for the rest of his life, the family were relocated to the St Austell district of Cornwall late in the war, where four more children were born between 1946 and 1952.

In the mid-1950s, the family (less the two eldest children) moved back to Southend and occupied a small house just three doors away from Albert's parents' shop. The move was partly due to the failing health of Albert's father, who died in 1957, and the needs of his mother. Albert worked as a stockroom porter in a major High Street store until his death on 10 Jun 1973. Some time later, Elizabeth returned to Cornwall and later married a Mr PEARCE, whom she had come to know during the war and post-war era. She died at Bodmin, Cornwall, on 7 Oct 1989 and although cremated locally, her ashes were brought to Southend to lie close to those of her first husband.

Albert's parents were Arthur Stockwell BURVILL, born at Cheriton on 15 Oct 1883, the first of two sons of George Arthur (1857 Dover - 1938 Folkestone) and Alice Maria (nee STOCKWELL, 1857 Cheriton - 1943 Folkestone), who married at Cheriton on 24 Nov 1881, and Rose Margaret COURT, born at Folkestone on 30 Dec 1882, the youngest of five children of William (1844 Folkestone - 1916 Folkestone) and Mercy Jane (nee HAMBROOK, 1839 Greenwich - 1898 Folkestone), who married at East Langdon on 7 Apr 1869. Arthur Stockwell and Rose Margaret married at St Michael, Folkestone, on 12 Aug 1907. Arthur Stockwell worked as a Storage Clerk before the Great War, in which he served with the Army Service Corps. He died on 27 Oct 1957 at the London Chest Hospital. Rose died on 28 Jan 1964 at Rochford, Essex.

Elizabeth's parents were Albert Sidney, born at Tyler Hill, Blean, Kent, on 4 Feb 1884, the youngest of at least four children of William Henry (1860 Canterbury - ) and Caroline (nee HOLNESS, 1861 Sturry - ), who married at Hackington St Stephen on 8 Oct 1881, and Lily HARNDEN, born 27 Feb 1885 at Chatham, the only known child of William James (c.1867 Chatham - ) and Mary (nee HOPE, c.1865 Marden - ), who married at Medway District Register Office on 21 Dec 1884. No marriage has been traced for Albert and Lily. He worked in the docks as a Stevedore and died some time around 1919. She died on 17 Aug 1915 at Chatham.

This brief resume covers four generations. We have much more information on file and have traced some lines back to the early part of the 18th century and even into the late 17th. We also have much information on branches of some of the families. Do please make contact if you think your own lines connect with any of those above or below. My e-mail address is below.
